The mandolin is a musical instrument that comes from the lute family. The mandolin is the soprano member of the lute family, and its soundboard can come in varying shapes, but is usually of a ‘pear’ or ‘teardrop’ shape. Mandolins have six double courses of strings that can be made out of many different materials, much like other common lutes.

There is the mandocello, the octave mandolin and there is even the Irish bouzouki, which is actually part of the mandolin family.
