Danelectro / 3012 Shorthorn Copper / 1962 / Copper / Guitar

The guitars and basses made by Danelectro in the ‘50s and ’60s epitomized “no frills”. These guitars and basses were designed by company founder Nate Daniel and had a body with a poplar frame covered in Masonite with grained side trim applied with adhesive, a neck with a rosewood fretboard, a non-adjustable truss rod (which the catalog cleverly labeled as “Two steel I-beams”), a primitive but slightly intonatable bridge/tailpiece, aluminum nut, and lipstick pickups. As crude as they might seem, these were well-designed and usable instruments that have a distinct character that is instantly recognizable.

The Shorthorn model was introduced in 1958 and replaced the U series models. They were available in one or twin pickup versions in black, blond or copper finishes. The single pickup versions have an interestering 3-way tone switch that selects either bypass, treble or bass roll-off.

This is a 3012 model, ie. a Shorthorn single pickup guitar finished in copper. It was played a lot but not abused. The neck shows considerable wear on the back but the copper finish on the body is in quite good condition. The fets are still very usable and this guitar has that typical Dano tone.

The serial numbers in the neck cavity are 4121 and 2022 (wk 41/1961 and wk 20/1962) which dates this guitar in 1962. This is consistent with the features: it has the totally shielded cavity, a new feature for 1962, but not yet the neck tilt adjustment screw that was introduced in 1963.
