Item Details
This 1955 Fender tweed Champ, or Champ-Amp, is model 5D1. Everything seems original, though admittedly we can't say if the resistors have been changed. The capacitors are original. The tubes have been replaced. The jewel light bulb is not working at the moment due. The power cord and handle are original and the tweed is quite clean. This little monster features a 6" speaker, lacquered tweed covering, WIDE PANEL rear mounted controls and a leather handle. This 5D1 features a single 6S17 preamp tube, a single 6V6GT power amp tube and a 5Y3GT tube rectifier. The speaker code reads 395450 and dates to 50th week of 1954. The speaker IS original but we have not identified the 395 factory code. We have seen this a few times on Champs from this era. The speaker was possibly made by Cleveland Electronic Inc. or "Cletron". Either way it still sounds great. Serial # 8718 Factory tube chart code: EC, dates this amp to March (C) of 1955 (E)
Overall Condition
This 1955 Fender Tweed Champ is in excellent condition. Everything looks and sounds excellent. The tweed is frayed only in one or two very small places. This amp has really come through the years in great condition. 5 Watts, Class A - everything you need to record killer vintage tube tones. Eric Johnson said it best: "The best amp in the world has just one knob".
