Fender / Coronado II CAR / 1967 / Candy Apple Red / Guitar

The Coronado was designed in the mid-60s by Roger Rossmeisl, former designer for Rickenbacker in response to the then very popular Gibson ES-330/335 models. However at that time public belief was that a hollow body with a bolt-on neck could never amount to anything and the model sold poorly, despite Fender's high expectations. Today the unique character of the Coronado is more appreciated, partly because of the comfortable necks (which resemble the Jazzmaster neck of around '67) and for this model unique DeArmond pickups.

This model has a very nice Candy Apple Red custom color finish (performed in nitrocellulose lacquer) that is slightly corroded to an almost bronze complexion but still in very good condition. The pickguard was signed by Jazz guitarist Bucky Pizarelli, a jazz guitarist from New Jersey. This guitar has hardly any fret wear and plays very easy. This guitar has a vibrato tailpiece that is somewhat similar to the Fender Mustang vibrato but works with a leaf spring. This tremolo system is remarkably effective, the detune range is somewhat limited but the action is very smooth.
