Gibson / ES-330TD / 1967 / Faded Sparkling Burgundy / Guitar

This Gibson ES-330TD from 1967 looks rather unique because of it's heavily faded Sparkling Burgundy finish. While the back of the guitar still shows some red the front is faded to an almost copper-like hue. Underneath the pickups, pickguard and even tailpiece the original colour is still visible.

This guitar plays well and the P-90s are quite powerful. The frets are still playable with only minor wear. Once we removed the crazy amount of foam that was stuffed inside the body the acoustic resonance of this guitar was back and it became a very lively instrument. Feedback isn't a problem as long as high-gain sounds at high volume are avoided. With some drive and especially through a small combo amp this becomes a very raw and aggressive guitar that is fun to play. This guitar is all stock except for the replaced tuners.

Funnily enough the second original owner of this guitar (during 1979-1985) met us at a local guitar show. He had some pics from 1985 when he sold the guitar and it was still bright red. He told us the guitar was imported early '70s from Canada by a jazz fan who, according to the catalog that came with the guitar, was really looking for a Tal Farlow but settled on this 330. This catalog is alas missing by now but the serialized hang tag is still with the guitar, as is the original two-tone black/white cardboard case.

This 330 was marked "2" ie. Second beneath the serial number. Whether this had something to do with the finish that might have been redone in the factory (SB was often used to hide flaws in Cherry finished guitars) or the export to Canada is unclear. Even if there was a cosmetic flaw by now it's impossible to tell what exactly it was.
