Player's Perspective
Music Store Live is proud to present this 1951 Gibson ES-5! This is a super rare guitar that has come through the years splendidly. Besides immense collectors appeal, it offers fully matured vintage hollowbody tone and an unsurpassed elegant feel. This guitar is ideal for straight jazz and blues styles. The tone is full and robust though with the unique control layout you can also dial in some skanky thinned out tones too which sound great for hybrid funky styles. We have set this guitar up to the best of our ability and think you will find that it offers a more than pleasant playing experience. This guitar has many more years of dedicated service in it. We're sure its new owner will be patting themselves on the back every time they pick it up.
Item Details
This 1951 Gibson ES-5 was the second "fanciest" archtop made by Gibson in this era behind the L-5C. This guitar was designed to be the fully electric version of the L-5C. Further, there were only 331 Natural finishe ES-5's manufactured between 1949-'55. This model features an all maple body that measures 17" wide, a rounded single cutaway and three P-90 pickups with individual volume controls and a master tone control. Other notable features include the black "stinger" headstock paint job ( the underside of which has been given a slight touch up ), adjustable rosewood bridge, trapeze tailpiece with three raised parallelograms and a bound Brazilian fretboard with large pearl block inlays. The finish on the back of the flame maple neck has been lightly sanded or just worn down giving way to a super smooth neck feel. Replacement parts include an era correct rosewood bridge, new bone nut, the neck volume pot has been replaced with an era correct Clarostat pot that's missing a washer and the control knobs are replacements as well. The frets on this guitar are still original and in good condition for their age. This ES-5 comes with its original hard shell case as well.
Last volume pot dates to 5th week of 1951. First two pots are unreadable because of solder joint location.

Overall Condition
This 1951 Gibson ES-5 is in very good condition. The body is excellent, structurally speaking. The neck has been reset and the neck joint is totally solid. There are a few small cracks in the binding here and there but nothing scary looking and no binding hanging off the guitar anywhere. There are some easy to spot touch ups on the back, back of the neck heel and the before mentioned stinger paint job on the back of the headstock. There is light finish checking and a very low number of finish impressions or dings.
