Gibson / Les Paul Super Standard / 1979 / Sunburst / Guitar For Sale
This is definitely a "one of a kind" Les Paul made 5 years prior to Gibson's custom shop's existence.
This Gibson Les Paul was confirmed by Gruhn and Gibson's Walter Carter and combines features from several different models and has been dubbed "the Les Paul Super Standard" by Les Paul Legacy author Robb Lawrence. Look for it in Robb's 3rd edition. The Body shape is a Les Paul but the guitar also has features from the L5 or L5S models as well as a Les Paul Custom, Standard and 25/50.
The electronics are those of the 25/50 model with stock coil tap. The headstock is graced with a torch inlay much like the fancier model L5's are. The fingerboard inlays are those of a Les Paul Standard but carved from real abalone instead of "pearloid" and set into an ebony fingerboard as on a Les Paul Custom instead of the traditional rosewood/standard for those inlays. The back is bound in single ply white binding nicely yellowed as is all the binding. The headstock is also bound in L5 style 5 ply binding and is quite elegant.
The most unusual feature is the fact that the guitar is completely wrapped in totally flamed maple sides and back over a mahogany body and the maple comes together at the cutaway where the binding travels from the front to back of the body ... again like an L5S. "When I first saw the guitar I thought I'd better make the truss rod cover plate correct again since it says 'standard' but this guitar came from a reclusive collector's estate and was never messed with and like all of his guitars remain in totally original and almost unplayed condition so my guess is that that too is original. They probably had no idea what to call it. The owner wrote 25/50 on the case tag but clearly did not begin to tell the story. I think it will wind up making someone very happy!"
