Gibson / Super 300 / 1954 / Sunburst / Guitar For Sale

Call for price

Gibson’s Super 300 was meant to be a less ornate version of the top-of-the-line, enormous 18” Super 400.  A large-bodied beast, this one provides the classic punchy, bright tone with plenty of volume.  It’s a very clean piece as well, with only very light checking on the top and no buckle rash at all.  The laminated, beveled-edge pickguard is just as clean and corrosion-free. With original blank one-stripe Kluson tuners and three-cutout tailpiece, the only modification is an added strap button on the neck heel.

This is a beautiful jazz box for both bright lead or rhythm work, a great alternative to the ornateness (and price) of the Super 400.  It’s a rare piece as well, as Gibson was slowly phasing out both the Super 300 and Super 400 during the boom of electric guitars.  Only 16 Super 300s were shipped in 1954, making this very rare indeed, almost a ghost even as it was being made.

 Summary

Body:  18" carved spruce top, maple back and sides with very nice quilting on the back.  Sunburst finish.

Neck:  Maple with bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard, split parallelogram inlays, crown peghead inlay.  Medium-wide, round profile.

Tone:  Bright and punchy with nice even volume.

Cosmetic Condition:  Very clean, with no buckle marks and very light checking on the top.  No neck wear to speak of besides a couple of dents.

Modifications:  Strap button added on neck heel. The pickguard has most likely been replaced since it does not have a beveled edge and is so clean. The treble side binding on the neck has been reglued near the pickguard.

Case:  Original hardshell

Asking Price: $6,595.00
