The Gretsch PX-6070 ‘Cello Bass’ was a 34" scale length bass that was introduced late 1962, after the failure of the earlier Bikini Bass. The PX-6070 bass model was far superior in every way to the short-lived Bikini, and an impressive beast to behold with the standard long scale neck and a hollow double-cutaway body based on the elegant and popular Country Gentleman guitar. It was often referred to as the “Country Gentleman Bass”. While the huge neck and the large instrument take a bit of adjustment the sound is totally unique.

The Cello Bass was designed to be played either standing up hanging from a strap, or in vertical position like a double bass. For this purpose there’s an extendable endpin buit into this bass. The endpin was phased out in 1964. This 6070 appears to be a transition model, as it has all the '64 model year specs but still has the extendable endpin.

The 17” archtop body is 2 inches deep. The electronics are a single Super’Tron Bass pickup positioned near the bridge, a three-way switch to adjust tone, a mute switch and a Master Volume control. The hardware is a bass "Space Control" bridge, “G” tailpiece, a lever operated mute system and gold hardware.

This 6070 is in very good condition. The bindings are still good, although they shrunk from old age they haven’t rotted so badly like on many vintage Gretsches. The rubber from the damper has deteriorated and the damper doesn't show a lot of movement. The pickup, electronics and tuners work fine. The neck was professionally reset by Dutch luthier Patrick Koopman so this bass will play great for many years to come.
