Lazy J Cruiser
Handmade with quality components, this pedal features the ultimate way to overdrive a tube amp. It’s a Booster/Overdrive pedal in one, or, depending on the settings, something in between.
I designed this pedal for myself in the mid 90s. I wanted an overdrive pedal that would retain all the dynamics (like a booster would) but not get too loud, not be all compressed and squashy and that I could control with my guitar’s volume control.
Of all the pedals I’ve used over the years, this is the one I couldn’t do without.
Used as a Booster it takes the signal from your guitar and amplifies it without changing its tone and dynamics.
The signal at the pedal output is exactly like the signal at the input, but bigger. This bigger signal has the ability to drive your amp much harder, resulting in really rich tube distortion with all the tone and dynamics retained. This means that it won’t sound squashed and compressed like many other overdrive pedals. What’s more, it can be fully controlled by your guitar’s volume control - back it off, and it’ll clean right up!!
You can now take this clean boosted signal and gradually distort it with the Saturation control, thereby adding compression and harmonic content at will. The resulting tone is thick and rich, with all the natural tone of your guitar retained.
Adding Saturation will allow a more driven sound at lower levels. Used as a Booster, the Cruiser is louder, with more attack and definition.
As both functions are built into this pedal, they can be combined for a wide variety of sounds.
This Pedal uses a True Bypass, so when it’s switched off the circuit is completely disconnected from the straight-through signal. Your guitar then goes straight to your amp, without the signal-loss or coloration associated with many other pedals.
Lazy J Projects, UK
Jesse Hoff has lived in many different places, both in Europe and the US, making a living partly as a musician and partly as an amp tech.
In all these different places he found himself working with fellow musicians on their specific ideas about their tone and equipment.
Someone would need a switching system, which would allow them to use their equipment more effectively…someone else wanted a certain type of preamp or distortion pedal. Then there was a whole host of amp modifications and set ups…
Over the years, Jesse has worked with countless musicians on their specific requirements. From many of these musicians, he learned that their big frustration had been that they couldn’t find anyone in their area who would work with them on their quest for better tone.
While many Techs have vast electronic knowledge, they often don’t have a musical background. Therefore they are sometimes at a loss when it comes to dealing with musicians and the tonal subtleties they are trying to achieve.
It has always been Jesse’s goal to bridge this gap.
Offering a very personalized service, he draws on his own extensive experience as a musician to help him better understand musicians and their pursuit of tone.
Spending over 20 years on stages in clubs and bars, Jesse’s approach was born out of necessity. Like everyone else, he worked on ideas about how to get the best out of his equipment, and in the process developed a certain philosophy about the crazy world of ‘better tone’.
As a result of his interaction with fellow musicians, as well as his own projects, Jesse built, serviced and customized countless amps and pedals. He has remained in contact with many of these players over the years and miles and continues to work with them into the future.
It is with their encouragement that Lazy J Projects has come about and is now making some of its projects more widely available.
In your own quest to get the best out of your equipment, give us a call. We will be glad to listen to your ideas and work with you on your way to achieving them.
