Martin / 00-28 / 1926 / Natural / Guitar
SN: 28023: Here is a sweet playing and sounding 00-28 herringbone with the slotted peghead and 12-fret body that produces such great tone. Brazilian rosewood back and sides, red spruce top, herringbone trim, snowflake inlays, ebony fretboard and bridge; this has all the hallmarks of one of the great eras in guitar making.
It’s in excellent condition save for one very short, tightly glued one-inch side crack in the “key-in-pocket” location, some playwear, some light play wear, and two areas on the top the size of a dime that at one time may have adhered a pick guard. The top and back are crack free. It has a fresh neck set and bar fret job by Mark Tossman and a new full height repro bridge with a new compensated saddle. The bridge plate is original. The playwear has possibly been sealed with some French polish and the fingerboard was planed some time ago.
A prior owner had a truss rod installed. While I cannot imagine why it needed it, it does add just a touch of heft to the neck, which actually makes the guitar feel quite good in the lap. The work is quite good as there is no evidence that the fingerboard has ever been off. The original green velour case – probably an upgrade when it was purchased – completes the package. This is a wonderful fingerstyle guitar that has complexity and depth across all the ranges. Even with the bar frets, it plays smoothly up and down the neck. With the new bridge and saddle, the intonation is perfect. We have it set up with light strings and it plays beautifully. A lovely instrument.
