Martin / D-18 / 1951 / Natural / Guitar
SN: 117975. Handsome D-18 with mahogany back and sides and mystery wood top that plays perfectly and sounds great. The guitar was retopped, most likely by Martin in the 1970s as warranty work. The work is excellent if not authentic. The new top appears to be a European or Engelmann spruce rather than the appropriate Sitka but that’s an upgrade. The pickguard resembles the reddish guards of the 1970s. The top binding has been replaced and is imperceptibly larger than the original. The interior bracing is new and appropriate to the period. If the bridge is not original, it’s an exact repro and it matches the fingerboard perfectly. The neck angle is perfect and the frets show no wear. The condition is immaculate. It's an incredibly fun guitar to play with all the guts and glory of a great, early 50s Martin plus some -- great attack, tone, and volume. This is a great deal for someone who needs a workhorse Martin for bluegrass, alt-country, or rock. Comes with a rockin’ baby blue 1970s Martin hardshell case.
