Lap and steel guitars are different to traditional guitars in that the bridge and nut at the end of the fingerboards are raised in height, usually by about half an inch. The frets can’t be used because of this, but some lap steel guitars can be marked. Other lap steel guitars can have mixed play from lap and conventional, but some are specifically designed just for lap with modified necks making it impossible to play conventional.
Pedal steel guitars are electric guitars that can shorten and even stop the length of strings using a metal slider. Its name comes from where it uses knee levers and foot pedals to affect the pitch of the guitar. It’s placed on legs with its strings pointing towards the player. It’s easy to use, but advanced pedal steel guitarists can configure their own setup. The pedal steel guitar was developed from the lap steel guitar.
