Comments:
The Electraglide was the brainchild of Andrew Bond, a former bus conductor who envisioned a guitar free from traditional wooden constraints. Its most striking feature is the stepped fingerboard: instead of metal wire frets, the board consists of a series of "sawtooth" steps; the strings are pressed against the sharp edge of each step to determine pitch. Decades before digital controls became common, the Electraglide used a motherboard and touch-sensitive rocker switches to control volume and tone, replacing traditional potentiometers. Because of this, the guitar cannot function without an external 15V power supply unit connected via a specialized TRS (stereo) cable. U2’s The Edge was a famous proponent of the model, having used it for the distinctive "obnoxious" scratching sounds on "One Tree Hill" and "Exit" from the Joshua Tree album. The company dissolved in 1986 after only two years of manufacturing the Electraglide. Because so few were made (around 1400 units) and their electronics are famously difficult to repair, these are now highly sought-after pieces.
