C. F. Martin & Co / D45 / 1986 / Natural / Guitar

1986 Martin D45

The pre-war D45 has entered the sphere of the ultra-iconic. Initially built following request by Gene Autry in 1933, the initial run from 1938 to 1943 only yielded 91 guitars. Martin use the finest woods and the most elaborate inlay to make these the crown jewel of Martin’s output. Reintroduced in 1968, they could be seen in the hands of artist such as David Crosby, James Taylor and Neil Young who considered his Martin his principal acoustic guitar.

With its exquisite Spruce top and Indian Rosewood back and sided, this is truly an exquisite instrument. The body has just a few minor knocks and dings but is free of any breaks and as such, any repairs. The Abalone and pearl inlays are stunning and living up to its billing as “the biggest, fanciest Martin…”. The neck is carved in a soft V and is comfortably full. The Abalone bound ebony fretboard and frets are in good condition as is the headstock.

This guitar comes with the original hardshell case which is the black thermo plastic moulded type with the CF Martin logo.

This D45 just evokes the sound of all those classic records. It has a wonderful action and an even response all over the neck. The tone is warm and articulate and reminds you why these guitars are so revered.

We don’t often have acoustics here at ATB but when we do we try and get the best. The D45 is undoubtedly the flagship Martin guitar and this one will not disappoint….
