Chris Larkin / ASAD HSS Burl Redwood / 1996 / Naturall / Guitar

Just back from a collector, I’m thrilled to have this very rare and beautiful guitar in stock again! Pre-owned guitars by Chris Larkin hardly ever surface, but when they do be sure not to miss out because they are among the finest handcrafted instruments made in Europe. I have been representing Chris Larkin Guitars as a dealer since 2015, and while there is a 10 month waiting-list for a custom-ordered ASAD, there are currently two of these incredibly fine guitar readily available on my website!

Chris builds his instruments completely by hand (no CNC !) in his workshop on the stormy west-coast of Ireland, and has been doing so for over 40 years now. The ASAD model reflects Chris’s innovative vision on guitar-making and combines ergonomics, esthetics and his knowledge of exquisite tone-woods into a truly unique design that plays comfortable and sounds just as good as it looks.

This ASAD was built in 1996 and offers loads of interesting features. First of all, the body and neck are made out of lightweight Brazilian Mahogany and the top is a stunning piece of burl Redwood laminated with maple which outlines the edges of the contoured body. The longer 25,5 inch scale-lenght brings some “snap” and brightness to this overall darker sounding wood combo. One clever feature you’ll notice when playing the guitar is that the first 15 frets are slightly larger than the upper 9. This provides more space for your fingers in the upper area of the fretboard. The pickups are custom-wound by Kent Armstrong and are hidden underneath hand-carved ebony pickup-covers which looks absolutely stunning. Tone-wise the ASAD really is in it’s own league, yet the HSS pickup configuration together with the five-way rotary offer tremendous versatility and familiar sounds. I’m particularly impressed with the “stratty” in-between sounds and the overall clarity of the pickups.

The guitar is remarkably clean for it’s age and shows only some light play marks here and there. There is however a slightly bigger dent on the back. There also was a chip in the headstock, but the previous owner had this repaired by a luthier and you’ll hardly notice it at first sight. Overall I would rate it as being in excellent+ condition. The guitar travels in a nice Hiscox hardcase.

A rare chance to acquire one of Chris’s fine instruments at a great price. A new one with these specs. would cost around € 3.500,- !
