Danelectro / 3412 Shorthorn Bass / 1963 / Copper / Bass

The guitars and basses made by Danelectro in the ‘50s and ’60s epitomized “no frills”. These guitars and basses were designed by company founder Nate Daniel and had a body with a poplar frame covered in Masonite with grained side trim applied with adhesive, a neck with a rosewood fretboard, a non-adjustable truss rod (which the catalog cleverly labeled as “Two steel I-beams”), a primitive but slightly intonatable bridge/tailpiece, aluminum nut, and lipstick pickups. As crude as they might seem, these were well designed and usable instruments that have a distinct character that is instantly recognizable.

Danelectro’s first four-string electric bass came out in 1958 and was called model 3412 (aka “Short Horn”). It featured a copper finish and a white “seal” pickguard (per its silhouette when horizontal). This bass had a neck with only 15 frets (joining the body at the 13th fret) and a short scale. The low weight, smaller fretboard and short scale made it an easy to play bass, especially for players used to guitar.

This 3412 Short Horn Bass is from 1963 and still has a seal pickguard and cokebottle headstock. It plays and sounds great and has that typical somewhat muffled, thumping but very usable sound. The short scale is very comfortable to play. A previous owner tried to repair some dents in the finish with copper paint and the headstock logo is somewhat faded but nothing that detracts from the early ‘60s vibe. The neck is still straight and the frets have plenty of life left.
