Epiphone / E111N Special / 1959 / Natural / Guitar

Researching this guitar has been one of the most daunting tasks we've had to date. None of it would have been possible without the incredibly generous help and expertise of Joe Vinikow of Archtopdotcom. He provided us with the model history below, and we are eternally grateful!

"Epiphone shipping records show that two models marked A-111N were built in 1959, the only year for the model, which we assume were both standard acoustic Emperors. We believe this particular piece, marked "Special" is almost certainly a custom order, as there is no prototype designation otherwise. Both the body and neck are old Epiphone stock from Conn in Philadelphia, as shown by the script logo headstock and the solid two piece back. We believe the guitar was originally built as a full depth acoustic Epiphone Emperor, and later retrofitted by Gibson with the electronics. The custom engraved truss rod cover reads "Bill Papa". While custom engraved TRC's were available on standard models, it's yet another indication the guitar was built to order. Finally, the fifth control (master volume) really seals the deal, as we've never seen another like it on any Gibson or Epi archtop."

The guitar is in overall good condition. There are various small, superficial scratches here and there but nothing to write home about. We believe it is truly a collector's piece. Like our other rare and historical archtops & jazz boxes, this guitar is for sale for the first time ever from a lovely collection of pieces from Epiphone's truly golden years.
