Fender / Jaguar / 1966 / Shoreline Gold / Guitar

Fender introduced the Jaguar model in 1962 in response to player feedback about the Jazzmaster guitar. Although the Jazzmaster never gained popularity with Jazz players it became very populair with the then current (surf-)popbands. Fender attempted to enhance the style and looks of the Jazzmaster and to make it more usable for the new target audience. The body of the Jazzmaster functioned as a template and the idea of separate lead- and rhythm circuits was maintained, as was the vibrato system. New features for the Jaguar were a shorter 24” scale length that was chosen to facilitate complex chord shapes, a switchable string mute and new pickups and switching that tended towards a brighter sound. The new Jaguar pickups were similar to Strat pickups but featured a metal surround aka ‘claw’ that aimed the magnetic field more which led to a punchier, brighter sound.

Despite all these R&D efforts and the luxurious presentation of the Jaguar model (chrome panels, Custom Colours) this model never did as well as Fender expected. When in the late ‘60s rock music became the trend the thin and bright sounding Jaguar was already somewhat obsolete. In 1975 production is seized. However, in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s the Jaguar became popular once more when many alternative/indie bands started using them for their cutting sound and specific vibrato system.

This 1966 Jaguar is a factory Shoreline Gold model but the body was refinished. According to the previous owner the first owner quickly wore through the finish and decided to redo it in the same colour. The matching headstock and logo are original and show the exact colour, as do the remnats of the paint in the body routs and neck pocket. This guitar was also refretted. The new frets are barely worn and the guitar plays great.
