Fender / Precision Bass / 1965 / Sunburst / Bass

Take a look at this cool late 1965 Fender Precision Bass in sunburst.

Refined in 1957, the Precision Bass has certainly become the mainstay for bass players all over the world regardless of genre. Even with the move over to CBS ownership, these instruments still retained the magic of their older siblings as the 60’s reached it mid point and the musical landscape started to change.

A classic example of the mid 60’s sunburst. This bass has been used but definitely not abused. The finish has dulled and faded the typical way Fender sunbursts do during this 65-67 era, some the colours are still very strong, yet others such as the red and yellow have faded in their own, unique to the period, way - have a look at the under the guard photos to see what we mean and observe the natural, UV induced contrast…

There are a few dings around the periphery but nothing serious. The neck is nicely worn with that comfortable satin feel. Time has darkened it but this adds to the character.

The hardware is still in great shape without too much corrosion on most of the parts. The original pickguard comes in the case. As you can see from the pictures, it has been damaged at some point but could still go back on if desired. The one on the bass at the moment is from the 70s so is quite close in age to the bass. This has survived well with very little shrinkage.

The electronics are correct and the pot dates are 42nd week of 1965. The neck date is June 1965 and we think this slipped out of Fullerton very late in 1965, possibly even first week of 1966.

The bass comes with a hardshell case which is not original but is still a very good case.

Sonically this bass delivers that classic Precision tone as, I suppose you’d expect. Deep without being too woolly, plenty of scope for expression and with a very nice action. Sometimes you don’t need too many controls or a preamp to get a great sound from the moment you plug in the instrument.

The backbone of so many records, everyone needs to touch one of these basses at least once. In fact, everyone must own one so make sure you don’t let this one slip out of your grasp…
