Fender Stratocaster (1961)
We are pleased to offer this 1961 Stratocaster from Fender, finished in 3-tone Sunburst.
This is a well-played example with clear player appeal, showing extensive wear and a naturally worn-in feel. It came to us from a local music shop in Detroit, where it had been on consignment from the original or second owner, making it a long-term ownership piece rather than a circulated market example.
It retains the desirable pre-CBS features associated with the period, including the slab board rosewood fingerboard. The neck is dated October 1961, the pots are dated to the 34th week of 1961, and there is no body date, which is not unusual. The neck and neck plate fingerprints are both reported to match the body one-to-one.
When the guitar arrived, it had a poorly fitted replacement nut and its original, very low frets. A new bone nut has since been fitted, and the guitar has received a fret job with vintage-style frets, resulting in excellent playability. The back of the neck was oversprayed long ago, though most of that clear coat has since worn away, with only a few small areas still visible. Some saddle height screws have been replaced.
It comes with its original brown tolex case with orange lining. The tremolo arm and tremolo backplate are missing.
A strong-sounding and highly playable 1961 Stratocaster from a sought-after year.
