A workhorse in a pinstriped suit, the 1966 Fender Telecaster Custom.

This guitar is fine example of the mid-60’s fender three tone sunburst that shows off the attractive grain of the alder body. There is some forearm wear to the lower bout and a few minor knocks and scratches but the finish hasn’t faded too much, although you can see where the yellow has darkened when compared to the finish under the pick guard. 

The neck has been over sprayed which is evident by the decal and in a few spots where the lacquer has chipped in the back of the neck. This doesn’t affect the feel of the neck too much and you only notice this when you look at it rather than when you play it. The fretboard is in great shape and the frets have plenty of life left in them. The headstock shows some signs of the tuner ferrules being removed at some stage which has chipped the lacquer down to the wood.

The hardware shows signs of use. The ashtray cover has certainly not been on this guitar very often as is evident by the corrosion on the saddles. The knobs show attrition to the chrome plating but the control plate is still in good shape as is the ashtray.

The electronics have been modified at some stage to post ‘67 configuration and the bridge pickup has been repaired, not an uncommon condition for telecasters of this age as not everyone finds the ‘woof’ tone an ideal option!

This guitar certainly delivers the classic tones tele tones, smoother neck pickup with a bitey bridge sound and nice blend when combinded. The neck is comfortable and sleek.

At once simple and versatile, the telecaster should feature in everyones guitar journey at some stage. The Custom brings an extra level of sophistication to the design.
