Gibson / EB-0F / 1964 / Cherry / Bass

Rare Gibson EB-0F bass with built in Maestro Fuzz unit. One of only 64 made in 1964. Superb clean and un-faded example. Pro re-fret and replacement correct nylon nut otherwise completely original. A must have for any serious collection.

First launched in 1962 the EB-0F bass incorporated Gibson’s new FZ-1 Maestro Fuzz unit built into the bass. An instrument that was ahead of its time, the production of the EB-0F lasted until 1965 when it was discontinued. A total of 265 EB-0F’s were shipped in the four years it was in production, making it one of Gibson’s rarest instruments. Ironically the powers that be at Gibson had already decided to discontinue the EB-0F before Keith Richards hit the switch of his FZ-1 Maestro Fuzz unit for the iconic guitar riff on (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, thus starting a whole new trend for fuzz driven riffage.

This EB-0F dates to 1964 and is one of only 64 made that year. The overall condition is excellent with only a handful of minor nicks and dings, and moderate play wear on the rear of the neck around the 5th to 9th fret position. The cherry finish is un-faded and retains its strong original colour. There is no buckle rash on the back, and this instrument has been played but clearly well looked after. At some point it has been professionally re-fretted with the correct gauge fret wire and also a new correct nylon nut has been fitted. The frets have minimal wear and years of life left in them. There are no breaks or repairs or any signs of touch-up or overspray anywhere.

All hardware and electrics are original with no signs of disturbed solder. The built-in FZ-1 fuzz unit works perfectly and has two new AA batteries fitted. The high output sidewinder humbucker pick-up delivers the classic deep, fat, thumpy bass tone that EB-0’s and their bigger sibling the EB-3 are known for. Flick the built-in fuzz unit’s switch in and things get very interesting. Using the on/off control knob (to set the mix of fuzz) and attack control knob there is a good degree of control over the level of fuzz from warm and fuzzy to downright gnarly and nasty.

No serious guitar and/or bass collection would be complete without an EB-0F. These are unique instruments and hold their own special place in the history of vintage guitars. They seldom come up for sale, so here is a great opportunity to get an excellent example for your collection.

Come in a vintage hard shell case.
