Black Magic Vintage is offering this 1961 Gibson ES-335 from the personal collection of Deryck Whibley, frontman of Sum 41. Whibley purchased the guitar in 2007 and has documented in a handwritten, signed letter that it featured on every Sum 41 album recorded since that date. The package includes a signed copy of his memoir, Walking Disaster, and a selection of his picks.
The provenance is substantive, but the guitar holds its own as an instrument.
At 8 lbs with the Bigsby installed, this is an exceptionally light example for a semi-hollow of this era. The factory-sealed PAFs read 7.88k at the neck and 7.85k at the bridge, a close and consistent pairing with a character that runs toward the brighter, more articulate end of the PAF range. The neck carve has genuine depth: .81" at the first fret and .89" at the twelfth. Original frets remain in excellent condition throughout.
