Gibson Historic Division / Les Paul R6, '56 Reissue ** ON HOLD ** / 2012 / Antique Gold / Guitar

Aw yeah, whenever I see a Goldtop, I can't help but to think back to the time when my brother picked up an album from a little known band called Boston. At the time, they were indeed unknown, but Glenn (my brother) would buy anything with a cool cover. That being said, I remember (well, as best as an 11 year- old could) how polished this band seem to be. The production of that first album was amazing and the guitar sustain and tone was a modern engineering marvel. I had no idea that Tom Scholtz had a degree in mechanical engineering. My idea of a rock guitarist was that of a guy who drank all day, didn't take baths and crashed on his girlfriend's couch. But this guy was a genius. Long before Pro Tools, this guy recorded that classic album in his basement on a four track. Not only that, he played most of the instruments. Why am I going on about Tom you ask? The guitar sounds on that first record were from a modified, late 60's Goldtop, so that power and sustain all came from nothing else but a Gibson Les Paul. It had to be: all of the greatest tones come from that winning combination of a Les Paul and Marshall. My father told me long ago, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and friends, he was right. Why are we guitarist always trying to reinvent the wheel? This very guitar, in imaginative hands could produce magic, so in the spirit of Boston, pull that first album out today, put to needle down and listen to a master. More than a feeling, when I hear that old song they use to play. I begin dreaming..
