Gibson / TG-00 Tenor Guitar / 1937 / Dark Sunburst Finish / Guitar

This is a real cool Gibson TG-00 Model Flat Top Tenor Guitar made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 547, its Dark Sunburst finish is over a rare Red Spruce top w/tapered X Bracing, its walnut stained mahogany back and sides are super clean, its mahogany neck has a nice rosewood fingerboard. The TG-00 is the tenor version of the L-00, and although these were Gibson’s least expensive tenor guitar, they generally have a big and powerful sound. The specs are the same as for the 6-string version, with the obvious exception of the narrow 4-string neck with 4 open backed original tuners. This example is quite clean from 1937 with a larger Amber Sunburst centered around the bridge. It also has front & back white bindings that started by 1937. Overall length is 38 1/8 in. (96.8 cm.), 14 3/4 in. (37.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 5/16 in. (11 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 22 5/8 in. (575 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/8 in. (29 mm.). This old and nicely original Gibson tenor has seen a fair amount of play, but hearing the sound it’s easy to see why. The top in particular shows a lot of weather checking but is very solid w/no cracks or repairs. The back of the neck has some play time to & also has some weather checking. The frets are in very good shape. The lacquered bridge is intact and does not appear to have ever been off and reglued, which is a minor miracle on one of these — even the pins are original. The guitar plays very well with an unusually deep, rich tone for a tenor, and has plenty of volume. For many a songwriter, a down-tuned tenor guitar is the ultimate muse — something different than the 6 string they might be accustomed to, but not so different as to get in the way of the song-building experience. This is quite a clean example, very solid & all original. Its excellent + overall & comes w/no case.
