Ibanez / American Master MA3HH / 1990 / Cherry Sunburst / Guitar For Sale

This guitar which represents the "Holy Grail" for every Ibanez serious collector, is the First Handmade Ibanez guitar ever made in the USA.

It is considered the "Flagship" of Ibanez.

Only 80 of them were ever produced and today less than 70 exist. Some of them have been destroyed or altered from various modifications. They were only produced for a few months by the famous American luthier Roger Gresco between 1989 and 1990. This particular model has a very unique and exclusive design.

The neck- thru is NOT made by adding wings to the body, but instead, the neck is INLAID into the body so the whole body resonates and produces a fantastic tone. This is the only neck through body guitar that was built that way in the world.

It was the most expensive Ibanez ever made and the most sought after by collectors.

Roger Gresco built his Ibanez guitars before the establishment and official opening of the L.A. Custom Shop (LACS) as we know it today. Ibanez hired him to produce the very first run of the upscale American Master (MA) series. These were highly specialized, extremely rare guitars featuring Gresco’s unique "topographic" neck-inlaid-to-body system. Due to their history, quality, limited production and unique design make them even more valuable than the guitars made by LACS.

At that time Roger Gresco was the most famous and innovative luthier in California. The RG shape, the wizard neck profile and the distinctive Ibanez headstock were created by him. Hence this model is more or less a "prototype" for Ibanez. Due to the limited number made, these guitars do not have a normal serial number, but they have a sticker either at the back of the headstock or inside the tremolo cavity.Mine has it at the back of the headstock.

Ibanez would introduce the upscale "American Master" lineup. In print, Ibanez called this "it's first American hand made guitar." Released in mid-1989, the American Masters were an Ibanez brand guitar produced by Roger Gresco, a luthier in California. Roger utilized an advanced "topographic" system which actually inlaid the neck in the body. These neck-thru like bodies were gorgeous, albeit with one minor setback. Production was slow and California paint codes were very strict (much more than Japan). As a result it was proving difficult to obtain the trademark "Ibanez" finish we all know and love. Due to these problems and strict environmental laws (for PSI and Material Data), the American Masters production by Gresco would last about eighteen months. Customers were unaware of the situation, and seemed willing to wait out the one year backorder on the American Masters. In the end, two models were made available: the MA2 (Solid Color) and MA3 (Maple Transparent). You can see these in the 1990 Ibanez print catalogs.
