Knutsen / Hawaiian Guitar / 1915 / Natural / Guitar

Here is a beautiful Knutsen with spruce top, and Koa back and sides, made between 1915-1920.  The fingerboard, headstock, and tapered part of the neck are Koa or possibly mahogany.  It is difficult to tell as these pieces of wood are stained darker than the koa back and sides.  The top, fingerboard and soundhole have rope binding.  Inside the top binding and around the rope binding on the soundhole is a dark green strip of wood that provides a beautiful accent.  The top measures 15 1/4" at its widest point.  The body is 3 3/4" deep at the end block.  The neck is square and hollow with the taper begining between the third and fourth frets.

The finish is all original with checking on all surfaces and a beautiful patina.  The instrument is crack free on all surfaces.  The original bridge has been reglued by our shop and two screw holes have been plugged in the bridge.

There is minor scaring on the top around the edges of the bridge caused by a previous amateur bridge reglue.  Five of the bridge pins may be original , but I am not certain.  The tuning machines have been replaced, and no additional holes were added to the headstock when they were changed.

This guitar has a beautiful, rich tone with incredible volume and sustain.  There are no major dings or scrapes in the finish, and no cracks on the top, back, sides, or neck.  The original label is present with no tears or creasing.  It is the full "New Hawaiian Family" white label.  This is a fine collectors piece and a dream to play.
