Comments:
The EP-3 was introduced in 1970 as a more reliable, solid-state successor to the tube-driven EP-1 and EP-2. It remained in production until the early 1990s, making it the longest-running version of the Echoplex. While designed as a delay, the EP-3 became legendary for its solid-state FET preamp, which guitarists like Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page used to "fatten up" their signal even when the echo was turned off. It features a sliding record head that allows you to manually sweep through delay times, creating unique pitch-shifting "spaceship" sounds. Unlike many analog delays that get darker with each repeat, the EP-3's repeats often sound brighter as the low end rolls off, helping the echo cut through a mix. It includes a Sound on Sound feature, allowing it to function as a primitive looper.
