The Martin HD-28 is a standard-series dreadnought acoustic guitar known for its powerful, resonant sound and vintage-inspired aesthetic. It features scalloped bracing for enhanced bass response, while the "HD" designation stands for "Herringbone Dreadnought", harking back to the pre-war D-28 models. Before World War II, standard D-28s had scalloped bracing and herringbone trim. After the war, cost-cutting measures and material shortages led to a switch to straight bracing and plain binding. In 1976, Martin introduced the HD-28 as a separate model to bring back these sought-after vintage features, specifically the scalloped bracing and the iconic herringbone top inlay, while keeping the standard D-28 (with straight bracing) in production. This 2019 model is part of Martin's "reimagined" Standard Series, introduced in 2017. This update incorporated even more vintage-correct specifications (like open-gear tuners, an aging toner top finish, and a wider nut width) while introducing a more modern, comfortable neck profile.
