A superb early StingRay with the rare and highly desirable factory A-profile neck. An exceptionally playable example of Leo Fender’s post-Fender-era masterpiece.

This 1978 Music Man StingRay represents everything that makes the pre-Ernie Ball era so revered—clarity, punch, and that unmistakable authoritative low-end that redefined electric bass in the late ‘70s. Finished in classic Natural, this is a beautifully honest example with a particularly appealing spec: the factory-ordered A-profile neck with a 38mm nut width.

The A-neck is a standout feature here. Considerably slimmer than the standard profile, it brings the StingRay into far more agile, Jazz Bass territory, making it an excellent choice for Jazz Bass players who want that signature StingRay tone but with the faster, more compact feel of the Jazz Bass width neck. These factory A-neck examples are relatively uncommon and increasingly sought after.

Tonally, this bass delivers exactly what you’d hope for — tight, piano-like lows, a punchy midrange, and that iconic active bite that cuts effortlessly through a mix. The original epoxy sealed pre amp circuit has been replaced with a correct spec unsealed version, which is quite a common mod as the original sealed pre amps could be prone to malfunction. The original pre amp is included in the case but is untested. The rest of the electronics are original.

Condition is very good overall and entirely in keeping with a well cared for working instrument. There are signs of natural play wear, including a handful of small dings, nicks, light surface scratches and some lacquer checking, all of which add character without detracting from the overall look. With the exception of the replaced unsealed pre-amp, it remains an original example.

The neck is comfortable and stable, with a smooth playing feel across the board, and the bass sets up nicely with a low, responsive action. It’s a proper player’s instrument with strong collector appeal.
