Silvertone / 57G 1446L “Chris Isaak” / 1964 / Black / Guitar

Introduced by Silvertone in 1961, the 1446 was the vibrato-equipped successor for the then populair Espenada model. The 1446 was manufactured by Harmony in the USA and used a true Bigsby vibrato tailpiece and made by Gibson mini-humbucker pickups.

The ‘Chris Isaak’-nickname dates from the late 80s when this artist used a 1446 for several promotion shots and on stage, while promoting a record called Silvertone. Because of its high-quality parts and cool understated tuxedo looks, the 1446 is one of the most sought-after Silvertone models in the vintage market.

This 1446 has been used intensely but is in a great playing and all original condition. The black nitrocellulose finish has a lot of patina and some dull areas. The white plastic parts have yellowed considerably as well. This guitar has a quite full neckshape that has almost no taper and a near flat fretboard with thin frets, so don’t expect modern playability. Still the action can be set quite low without buzzing so it’s not a hard to play instrument. There are some divots in the fretboard near the cowboy chord positions but these don’t interfere with playing. The Gibson pickups offer a clear and bell-like tone. While sustain is maybe somewhat limited because of the somewhat flimsy plastic/wooden bridge, the sound of this guitar is an instant flashback to the sixties.
