The Memory Man is an analog delay that has been around since the mid 70's. It is one of the most popular delay pedals of all time. Created to simulate the sound of tape echo machines without all of the maintenance. It achieves this using an IC chip in place of tape. A completely solid-state design that virtually eliminates any need for service.

Overall there are basically five original versions of the Memory Man. The original pedals remained in production until early 1984 when EHX experienced severe financial trouble and was forced into bankruptcy.  Production for all of the EHX pedal lines stopped and the company was outsourced to Russia. From there a few models were resurrected as Russian versions although the Memory Man was not one of them. In the early 90's Electro-Harmonix regained control and brought back many of the classic pedals including the Memory Man.

In the ratio of quality and features many will say the original reissue version is the best. They offer superior sound features such as low noise, long delay time, and the deluxe features such as chorus/vibrato and level knobs among other things that many find more desirable. Sometime in the 2000's there was a change to the reissue version which I believe is the era this one comes from.

This Deluxe reissue version varies in several ways from the original reissues. Most notable is the addition of the "true bypass" switching. This changes the way the pedal operates by taking the entire circuit out of the path when it is deactivated. This eliminates the use of the Memory Man as a Booster when the pedal is not engaged, which is argued as a big disadvantage to the true bypass versions. I am not by any means an expert on the circuit or it's different phases and forms, so I'm sure there are plenty of other changes ie; IC's ect...that have taken place from here to there which I will leave out for lack of technical expertise.The Memory Man as with many EHX pedals has had a long and intricate history with many major and minor changes over the years, but in essence it is still the same idea.
