Six string basses have six strings, and were first created by Danelectro in 1958, as a bass tuned down an octave. Although it was made before the five stringed bass, it is much less commonly used in today’s music then that of the five stringed bass, much like it is less commonly used than the four stringed bass.
Six stringed basses are still used in jazz music, Latin music and several other music genres. In the 1970’s, a Contra bass guitar was created, which has now evolved into a modern six stringed bass.
