Comments:
The FT-79 originally debuted in 1941 as a New York-made Epiphone with a walnut body. After Gibson purchased Epiphone in 1957, they redesigned it as the "Texan," moving production to the legendary Kalamazoo, Michigan factory. It was reimagined as a "long-scale" version of the Gibson J-45, making it unique among slope-shouldered dreadnoughts. While it looks like a Gibson J-45, the Texan features a longer 25.5-inch scale length (similar to a Martin or a Fender), which provides higher string tension and a brighter, more "punchy" tone than its Gibson counterparts. Guitars from this period were built by the same craftsmen, using the same tonewoods and methods as the "Golden Era" Gibsons. This model is most famous for being the primary acoustic guitar of Paul McCartney, who used a 1964 Texan to record and perform "Yesterday”. Other legendary users include Jimi Hendrix, Peter Frampton, Noel Gallagher, and Graham Nash. It remains a iconic acoustic for its role in 1960s British rock and folk.
