Ibanez / 2355 / 1977 / Sunburst / Guitar For Sale
Rare and fantastic ‘77 Ibanez 2355 in stunning condition with OHC
You may have heard of the ‘lawsuit’ era guitars - well this is a classic example on the flesh. There’s a reason these guitars (in mint condition) are hunted down by jazz and blues aficionados alike; interested? Read on…
In the mid to late 70s the big Japanese builders were not only building fabulous copies of the big US names but this coincided with a discernible drop in quality with some of the Us giants. I’m fact this very guitar model pushed ‘G’ into filing a lawsuit - it was so similar to the ES 175 (In fact beating it hands down in blind tone and play tests) that it spurred the big US brand into action.
For us guitarists it was only a good thing - Gibson had to raise its quality again, and quickly; whilst eagle eyed and discerning collectors became even more aware that these high quality gorgeous guitars were coming out of the Far East - again with Japan leading the way in terms of quality. Within a few years Ibanez had to re design the models so completely that it became impossible to source guitars like this anymore.
The date of the lawsuit - 1977. This guitar was at the pinnacle of that time in terms of quality and that’s made them the collectors target that they remain today.
Here we have an almost mint example of this fabulous guitar; almost identical to a vintage Gibson ES-175 with a slightly deeper body (helping to reduce some of the occasional troublesome fb that comes from the hollow body guitars). We’ve seen guitars less than a year old with more wear and tear - this came to us directly from the collector who bought it nigh on 50 years ago and it’s clearly been fantastically well cared for.
The visual impact of the guitar is stunning and, for Jazz and Blues, the tone and playability second to none. Added to that you’ll have a genuine collectors piece in your hands for a fraction of the cost that they’re popping up for (v occasionally) in the US right now.
