In many card games, The Joker is the only guy who can really be whatever he wants. In historical terms, that’s because the joker - the liminal aberration, the shaman, the trickster, the court jester – was the guy who generally had the balls to step into the roles that most found too daunting or out of character. And then he would change roles just when the king's court thought they had him all figured out.
