Gibson / ES-175D / 1953 / Sunburst / Guitar

The ES-175 debuted in 1949 as as a mid-level laminated top alternative to the L-5 model and as an electric version of the L-4. It was also the first Gibson electric to feature a stylish Florentine cutaway. Its first incarnation had a single P-90 pickup in the neck position and a carved rosewood bridge. The model's name is derived from its original selling price of $175. In 1953, the ES-175D, a two-pickup model, was introduced. The ES-175 and ES-175D were availabe in either sunburst or natural finish for an additional charge.

This first-year 1953 ES-175D in sunburst finish is in excellent condition. Apart from a refret, a repro pickguard and a replaced bridge top she’s in near original condition, with no breaks or structural repairs. The colours are nearly unfaded and the lacquer is in great condition for a guitar of this age. The neck is straight and the guitar plays very well with a low action. The early P-90 pickups have a nice defined tone when played clean but also have a nice growl when played with a bit of crunch added from an amp. All in all a beautiful early Gibson that is well suited for both traditional jazz- and roots/rock ‘n roll/rockabilly players.

Alas the original case is missing but a modern case is included with the sale.
