Gibson / L4CN (1st Year) / 1949 / Natural / Guitar For Sale
The very 1st year of production for an L4C or L4CN. These guitars are a working mans way of owning a carved solid spruce topped arch top guitar. 16" wide solid spruce top and the size of an ES175TD but acoustic whereas the 175 had a laminated top (and 2 P-90s of course).
This natural example is from the 1st year of the model and bears a white label A 43XX serial # and just sounds heavenly. The whole point of these guitars is to PROJECT past the louder instruments and boy DOES IT!! Beautiful Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and 1+11/16 width at the nut. Nice round full C shape neck profile but not huge. Plenty of playwear on the back mid section of the neck.
The reason it is not priced up with many of the others (6-$7500) is because though in beautiful shape there is some neck wear. The tuners are newer Kluson deluxe's "no line". era appropriate repros And there are 2 well fixed side cracks bass side mid body. You can see them if you look closely (pics 13 and 16). Frets are orig and have plenty of dings but they don't get in the way of playing and aesthetically can be prettied up with a topping but they are functional as is.
It has a nice tight grain on top and sounds like a bell. The original pick guard (in case) has been cut for a floating pick up so going electric is easy BUT friend and Luthier Steve.Soest built me another using NEW OLD STOCK 1940s Gibson BWB material he bought up YEARS ago!! Comes in an era correct brown speckled soft shell case (see pix)
