Fender / Precision Bass / 1958 / Sunburst / Bass

From 1958 with a bullet, the Fender Precision Bass

In lieu of introducing a new model to the bass range Leo Fender chose to modify his flagship instrument, the one that started it all, the Prescison Bass. 1955 saw the introduction to the body contour and two tone sunburst, aligning the P-Bass with its stable mate the Stratocaster. In 1957 the Precision bass was given a further facelift with split coil pickups, new bridge, new headstock shape and anodised pickguard. The modern Precision Bass was born.

This instrument is in superb condition. The three tone sunburst immediately pops out with no evidence of any fade on the top or back. A classic example of the finish the year of introduction. There is evidence of buckle rash on the back, a few scratches on the top and there has been some touch ups along an edge or two but this bass has evidently been well cared for over the past 60 years.

The neck too is in fantastic shape. Again the lacquer has been well preserved, the only real discolouration is around the headstock which could be attributed to the case. The frets have seen use but have plenty of life left in them.

One of the most note worthy features of this instrument is the condition of the hardware. The bridge is an almost perfect example with no sign of corrosion. The cover never came off this bass. Also surprising is the condition of the foam mute. A common factor with instruments of advancing age is that foam pads degrade and harden to the point of being useless. In this case the foam is still supple and so works as Leo intended.

The Anodised pickguard shows signs of wear around there base of the neck and the thumb rest, unequivocally proving that it was used at some stage! There are also marks that indicate that a previous owner had letter box type stickers applied, possibly their name or initials. Otherwise its in great condition. Electronically everything looks correct, the pots dating from the end of 1957. All solder joints look undisturbed.

The bass comes with a hardshell case

For hassle free bass fun, your first stop should always be a Precision Bass. The maple neck feels full and familiar in the hand. With the covers on there is a wonderful thump thats has the right amount of muting not to completely kill the note. When the covers come off you get this bright punchy tone proving there is nothing not to like about this bass.

The classic P-Bass appointment, in three tone finish with anodised pickguard, maple neck and killer tone, you do have to ask yourself ‘what more do I want form my Precision Bass?’
