Gibson / Les Paul Conversion / 1956 / Sunburst / Guitar

Renowned, luthier Yuuki McClure of Player Grade Vintage has weaved his wizardry magic to breathe new life it to this old Les Paul and boy, he has done a mighty fine job of it too…

Here is the description from the current owner on what has been done on this guitar -

_’Meet Lazarus

This was a real basket case when it came to be converted. Someone had painted it bright blue, installed a bigsby, installed a front facing jack socket (WTF), chewed out some of the back with a router to “weight relieve it” and the headstock had snapped clean off and was repaired with two metal pins.

So the back was filled with old mahogany, and then covered with more mahogany to hide the fill. A really nice job, with a nice grain match. The headstock was way beyond repair, and had no serial and so a new headstock was build and grafted onto the original neck. A better option than a full reneck IMHO as most of the original neck is saved. The join is clean and isnt noticeable when playing. Original 56 board, which is really cool. To give it a cool vintage look, it has the headstock veneer from an old ES model headstock that was again something beyond repair. Some people may prefer a fully refinished new headstock, but I love the look of this, crown and all. Just somthing different, a bit like plugging the original cut 56 guard hole with an old coin.

Underneath the solid blue paint was this amazing, and rare, one piece blister top. The vintage looking refin and fade/ageing really makes it pop. The bigsby holes and the jack hole were plugged and again, a great clean job. Cant speak highly enough of the quality of the work done to bring this once written off guitar a brand new lease of life.

Pickups are early 60s purple wire PATs. They, and the guitar, sound incredible. It has a real ring to it, lots of sustain and sounds great even when unplugged…. It has great depth and to me has a real Gary Moore Stripe sound going on.’_****

So there you have it, the full story as we have been told. Other things to note are, it has had a refret with slightly larger frets, the harness and pots are from the 50’s but the date codes are obscured. The knobs and switch tip are correct, the pickguard is a cut down 50’s P-90 guard, all other plastics are repros of good quality. The tuners are gold plated double line Kluson (maybe from an ES-345 headstock which could possibly be the donor mentioned above).

Guitar plays well, has a good feel and the top looks really good with a nice top carve and finish. Included is a non original modern hard case.

What you get is a very cool guitar that is a lot cheaper than a 56 or a 59 yet retains most of the looks, feel and definitely the sound of a real Burst. How can you refuse…?
