Gibson / Les Paul Standard Goldtop / 1955 / Gold / Guitar
Always popular these 50’s wrap tail Goldtops, in fact this will be number seven we have sold so far this year. This one is a lovely 1955 example, one of the last wrap tails made before they switched to the tunomatic bridge later in the year.
This one is all correct except it has had a re-fret which is a very nice job that has frets only just slightly larger than original, plus some solder touch ups in the control cavity. When we received it the tone pot was not working but it was a simple case of reheating a dry joint on the capacitor connection to fix the problem.
Both pickups produce classic, vintage P-90 loveliness in abundance and both are strong and creamy sounding. Both are nicely balanced too which is not always the case with these 50’s P-90 Goldtops. As it has had a recentish re-fret the guitar plays superbly well and if playing it is your aim or your wish, this one will not disappoint…
It is in very good overall shape with the usual lacquer checking on the top, a bit of wear on the back and a few dings here and there. It is not an under the bed find, it has been played and if you do the same, it will reward you.
Included is the correct 1955 brown pink ‘cal girl’ case that is in decent shape but does have some tape at the edges. Handle and latches seem fine though.
Most of the wrap tails we see are from 1953 and 1954, relatively rare to get one in from 1955 and 1955 was a great year for the carved, dish top which this one has a nice example of.
The others we had flew out the door fairly quickly, I wonder how long this will be around for…
