1960 Fender Jazzmaster

A 1960 Fender Jazzmaster with slab fingerboard has just arrived.

The Jazzmaster debuted in late 1958 as Fender’s third electric Spanish guitar model, following the Telecaster and Stratocaster.
The earliest examples were equipped with gold anodized aluminum pickguards, but due to grounding issues and wear from picking on the aluminum surface, Fender changed the specification in late 1959 to the tortoiseshell-pattern celluloid pickguard, similar to the one used on the Jazz Bass.
The instrument we have received this time is a 1960 Jazzmaster from the early period after this transition, featuring the tortoiseshell pickguard.
Many sunburst Jazzmasters from this era have faded so that the red portion of the finish disappears, leaving a two-tone burst appearance. This example, however, still retains some of the original red in the sunburst, which is a desirable feature.
Of course, it features the slab-laminated rosewood fingerboard and the early paper-in-oil tone capacitor, typical of the early slab-board Jazzmaster specification.
Cosmetically, the guitar shows playwear and weather checking consistent with its age, but overall remains in excellent condition for a vintage instrument.
The frets have been replaced, ensuring good playability. Aside from replacement bridge height adjustment screws, the instrument retains its original components.
With its distinctive tone—quite different from a Stratocaster—the Jazzmaster has proven versatile across many musical styles, from grunge to melodic pop. Among vintage Jazzmasters, many players consider the slab-board period to offer some of the best tone, and this example is a great opportunity to experience that sound.
The guitar includes its original brown Tolex Fender hard case.
