Fender / Telecaster / 1966 / Refinished Black / Guitar

1966 Fender Telecaster in Black just itching to rock out!

Alder body is in good shape without any new routing. The refinish has been done well and seems to have been done a while ago. The back is worn from use including some heavy wear or slight chamfering on the back at the top (see pictures). It looks like wear but may be more deliberate. There is some nice subtle finish checking which looks to have happened as the finish has aged.

The neck has escaped refinishing. The back of the neck is worn and shows some scars but is in good shape. The fretboard is free of wear and the frets have plenty of life left. The headstock is original finish with what is left of the original decal however at some stage a previous owner went a bit string tree mad and had a string tree fitted for each pair of strings!

The hardware is in good shape. The bridge plate shows a little sign of corrosion which can also be said for the control plate. A piece of the bridge lower edge has been cut out which may be for some kind of palm pedal for the B and G strings. It does not affect its functionality however.

Electronically there has been some work to make the wiring like a modern Tele without the woof tone on the bridge pickup and a correct grey bottom bridge pickup is installed in the guitar. Switch is the unusual style that you only see during this 66-68 period. The pots are correct, both dated at week 47 of 1966. The capacitor too is correct ceramic type. The solder joints seem to be correct between the pots.

This guitar sounds great. The combination of alder and the grey bottom pickup gives this guitar a strong voice with the combined position and then the neck calming things down gradually but brining their own voices to the mix. The neck is comfortable making this a wonderful guitar to make music with.

If you’ve got a hankering for a mid-60s telecaster but haven’t managed to find the funds then surely this is the guitar for you. The finish is first rate and it plays like a dream. Don’t let it get away.
