Gibson / ES-175 D / 1961 / Natural / Guitar

Introduced in 1949 as a mid level archtop, the ES-175's all laminate construction meant that costs could be kept down and also is noteworthy for being the first Kalamazoo design to feature a Florentine cutaway. The two pickup D model indication was introduced in 1953 though some double pickup guitars were made in 1951 and 1952. February 1957 saw the addition of humbucking pickups

As you can see from the photos, this guitar has had a life. The top, back and sides show some wear and the lacquer has taken on the unmistakable nicotine hue of many late night hours. Originally sunburst, the guitar has been stripped and lacquered. Structurally everything looks good with no signs of any major repairs. There is some sign of there having been gaffer tape over the f hole on the bass side and the lacquer has been worn smooth in quite a few places.

The neck too has been worn smooth. There is a small patch of raised lacquer under the first fret which is a later addition and the headstock has been oversprayed. The fretboard is worn and there are inlays missing as well as sections of binding. It's been refretted and a brass nut is currently fitted. There seems to have been quite a variety of tuners on the guitar during its life. There are no signs of any breaks.

Plastics look to be correct. The pickguard is quite extensively worn as you can see, the top black layer having been worn away in places and an additional screw fitted. Pickup surrounds are correct. The bridge looks to be an Alembic style brass bridge, matching the nut. The rosewood portion of the bridge seems to be pinned too.

A Bigsby B7 has been fitted along with a medallion.. An additional strap button has been added at the heel.

The electrics look to be all correct. The pickups are PAFs which have had the covers removed but there isn’t any sign that they’ve been rewound. As was customary at the time, the pots have cans around them. The can for the neck pickup seems to have ben opened but elsewhere they are all intact.

The guitar comes hardshell case

Tonally, this guitar is quite lively. As you’d expect, it’s loud acoustically, exhibiting a pleasing woody tone which comes across when amplified. Both pickups work well together and bring out the character of the guitar, taking you from a warm, rounded sound to something altogether more raucous. .

This guitar has mojo-a-plenty with tone to match. You’ve wanted this from the moment you saw it so just go ahead, the buttons right there…
