A near MINT and pretty rare Gibson Les Paul Goldtop made in limited quantities during 1971-1973 and wrongly marted by Gibson as a “58 Reissue” which it obviously is not!

This is of course more like a '54 reissue and one can only assume whoever was in charge of the nomenclature dept at Norlin during that period must have either been having a bad day, or was maybe just a clueless Norlin bean counter...?

Despite the name cockup, they definitely did not skimp on the specs. Unlike virtually all of the ‘Gibson Les Paul's of this period this one has a one piece (non pancake) body, a one piece neck and no volute. Conspiracy theorists debate whether they used up genuine 50's bodies on these guitars but personally, I do not subscribe to that.

This particular example from the first year of issue is just about as good as you will ever get. It is near MINT and totally 100% original in every way, down the last screw and solder joint.

There is one small ding on the top, at the bottom edge which prevent me from describing it as mint. It has the lovely, Gibson embossed P-90 pickup covers on all original P-90's that sound super and well balanced.

Weight is 4.6Kg and neck is reasonably chunky, in fact quite like a real '54 so in every respect apart from the name, they pretty much nailed it for a 54 RI.

As is common for this period, this LP comes complete with the factory fitted cream goof hiders around the pickups and I must admit, in this context I think they actually look fairly cool!

Without a doubt, the best example of this rare guitar we have come across and a good candidate for future collectors..?
