Gretsch / 6120 / 1961 / Orange / Guitar For Sale

Michael Gilligan was a feature of the Irish Showband circuit during its heyday in the late 50s and early 60s, playing with the Blue Aces and The Royal Showband, touring the country and even playing the Royal Albert Hall. The popularity of the showbands was such at the time that musicians were earning substantially more than the average wage which meant they could afford the imported American instruments and equipment.

Michael bought this guitar, the first Gretsch 6120 in Ireland, brand new having seen Duane Eddy play one. Having had it imported, the shop wanted to display it in the window but he couldn't wait. It became his constant companion and when he moved back to Liverpool in 1963 he brought it with him and gigged it until recent ill health forced him to stop playing.

This guitar is in great condition considering its long years of faithful service. The top has faded a little which brings out the grain nicely. There are a few marks here and there and the initials MG have been hand painted onto the top. The binding, always a point of contention with Gretsches, is remarkably intact.

The neck is in superb shape. It's worn comfortably and there is plenty of life left in the original frets. The fretboard is in superb shape.

The hardware is worn as you expect though this isn't extensive and there is very little in the way of corrosion.

The electronics are in good shape and have remained untouched.

The guitar comes with its correct hardshell case.

Sonically this guitar delivers. The unamplified sound has a clear tone that really translates plugged in. Both pickups sound so wonderful, very classic Gretsch and the array of switches add to the tonal palette. The springiness of the Bigsby is also so pleasing.

If you’re on the lookout for a great looking vintage Gretsch then stop immediately and get yourself over here, this may be the one for you!
