1956 Fender Precision Bass

Original Precision Bass

Now in stock.

We are pleased to offer a late-1956 Fender Precision Bass, an excellent example from the early years of the world’s first production electric bass guitar.

Originally introduced in 1951, the Precision Bass revolutionized music as the first electric bass capable of providing accurate intonation across the fretboard. The early models featured a Telecaster-style slab body and blonde finish.

In 1955, Fender introduced the first major design update to the Precision Bass, giving it a contoured body and sunburst finish similar to the Stratocaster. This redesign made the instrument more comfortable to play while retaining its distinctive single-coil pickup design. A further major redesign would follow in late 1957, introducing the split-coil pickup and the familiar Precision Bass shape that remains today.

This instrument is a late-1956 example, produced after the 1955 redesign. Around this time Fender also began transitioning from ash to alder body wood, bringing the tonal characteristics closer to those heard on contemporary Stratocasters.

Cosmetically, the bass shows honest buckle wear on the back of the body, typical for vintage instruments finished with the thin lacquer used during the 1950s. Considering the instrument is now nearly 70 years old, it remains in excellent overall condition.

A few screws have been replaced, but otherwise the instrument appears to retain its original components, and the neck and setup offer excellent playability.

Tonally, the bass delivers the warm, rounded sound associated with early Precision Basses, especially when played with flatwound strings and the bridge mute engaged. This classic sound has been favored by many players over the years, including Sting, who has famously used early Precision Bass models.
