1958 Fender Precision Bass

Maple One-Piece Neck with Gold Anodized Pickguard

Now in stock.

We are pleased to offer a 1958 Fender Precision Bass featuring the classic maple one-piece neck and gold anodized aluminum pickguard, an iconic configuration from the early years of the redesigned Precision Bass.

In late 1957, Fender introduced a major redesign of the Precision Bass. The new version featured the now-famous split-coil pickup, a contoured body, a revised headstock shape, and the distinctive gold anodized aluminum pickguard. These changes marked the beginning of what collectors often refer to as the second-generation Precision Bass.

This example dates from 1958 and retains the desirable maple one-piece neck, a specification used prior to the introduction of rosewood fingerboards in late 1959.

Cosmetically, the bass shows light playwear typical of the thin finishes used during the 1950s, but notably there is very little buckle wear on the back of the body, something rarely seen on vintage basses from this period. Overall, the instrument remains in excellent, clean condition.

The body appears completely unmodified, and the instrument retains its original components.

Early Precision Basses from this era are closely associated with the sound heard on early Motown recordings. Before switching to his later slab-board Precision Bass, James Jamerson performed with an earlier maple-neck Precision, helping establish the thick yet articulate tone that defined countless classic recordings.

With relatively few examples surviving in this kind of condition, instruments like this offer a rare opportunity to experience the sound and feel of an early Precision Bass from the late 1950s.
