1960 Fender Precision Bass – Slab Fingerboard, Two-Tone Sunburst

Now in stock.

We are pleased to offer a 1960 Fender Precision Bass featuring the desirable slab rosewood fingerboard, presented in very clean condition.

In late 1959, Fender introduced the rosewood slab fingerboard to the Precision Bass, replacing the earlier one-piece maple neck. This design remained in production until mid-1962, when Fender transitioned to the thinner round-laminate fingerboard, making slab-board Precisions a relatively short-lived variant.

These early rosewood-board Precision Basses became legendary instruments and were widely used by influential players such as James Jamerson, whose bass lines defined the Motown sound, as well as Carol Kaye.

This example dates from 1960 and represents a classic slab-board Precision from the early years of this design.

Cosmetically, the bass shows some buckle wear on the back, but overall remains in excellent condition for its age.

The original three-tone sunburst finish has naturally faded, leaving the red layer subdued and giving the bass the appearance of a two-tone burst, a look often seen on instruments from this period and highly appreciated by vintage enthusiasts.

The volume pot has been replaced with a CTS unit dated 1975, while the remainder of the instrument appears original.

Tonally, this Precision delivers the powerful, warm sound associated with early slab-board P-Basses, with a strong fundamental and clear definition whether played with a flat or round tone setting.
